Acting Up

Back to Blogging

I haven't blogged here since 2012. Why am I making a stab at it again?

I realized two things about social media I wanted to get away from. First was that I was often using it as a journal, which is boring and maybe TMI for those platforms. Secondly I was using it too much for my taste, so that I felt like a tool for marketers rather than using social media as a tool for my ends.

A Little (too much) Excitement.

I took Mom out for lunch on Father's Day. She had left a couple messages earlier in the week wanting to go out someplace. I'd already planned to go to Ivar's near Fremont and drop by the Fremont Troll (About the troll, and a picture.). I'd forgotten about the Solstice Parade, which is fun but a bit of a madhouse so she wouldn't enjoy it.

In lieu of that we went to the Five Spot for a lunch, which worked out well as when I'd asked if she wanted to go for lunch I'd completely forgotten Father's Day was coming up. Like it does every year. We had a nice lunch, and she wanted a drink. No objection from me these days -- for those who don't know Mom well she is a recovering alcoholic. Not likely to be a problem at this point and she didn't sip much of her gin and tonic. I don't know if she was feeling full or if it just wasn't as nice as she remembered. My only hesitation was for her medications, so I called back to Queen Ann Manor and Linette checked with her nurse who approved.

She had a bit of excitement the day before, Saturday the 16th. Linette gave me a quick recap when I picked her up. Mom choked on a bit of chicken and they called the paramedics. Apparently it was more exciting for the people around her, as she didn't seem to have much recollection. I did keep an extra eye on her while we ate in case it happened again. My concern being that she might be more prone because of medication or her changing condition, or simply because of the recent incident. I seem to get a bolus stuck more often myself when it has happened recently. Luckily nothing more than my extra diligence happened, like ordering the drink to arrive when she was done eating.
