Back to Blogging

I haven't blogged here since 2012. Why am I making a stab at it again?

I realized two things about social media I wanted to get away from. First was that I was often using it as a journal, which is boring and maybe TMI for those platforms. Secondly I was using it too much for my taste, so that I felt like a tool for marketers rather than using social media as a tool for my ends.

It's been a little while. A week ago Saturday, 21Apr12 I had a nice conversation with Terrie. We were getting caught up and she mentioned how excited Mom was to hear from people. That was especially nice for me to hear. I'm thinking some of Mom's irritation with people calling had something to do with my not getting the phone on the do not call registry until a week after I got it for her. Last week when I talked to her she was irritated with some calls she couldn't understand, and I had the impression/intuition she was dealing with the typical telemarketing predators.
Then on Tuesday the 23rd I received a text from Louise Hansen. Louise is Mom's half sister -- my Grandfather Elmer was an alcoholic and apparently a bit of a cad. I don't know if he was officially a bigamist, I just assume he was. I like the scandal. We didn't know about Louise and her brothers until about 25 years ago when she tracked down Mom. It was a wonderful revelation, and shortly after that I stopped by Joplin to visit -- I believe it was in the late Spring of 1987 while I was en route to Guam from Key West. The Navy kept my in nice warm climates.

Louise flew up for a visit, arriving a bit after Noon on Saturday May 28th. She was originally scheduled to arrive late on Friday but there was a mix up. We put her up at the house and it was a wonderful visit for us and for Mom. I hope to see Louise (aka Aunt Lou) again sometime, and maybe Bill her son and her brothers. They had a nice visit on Saturday, for a bit more than an hour. Then on Sunday Ericka and Louise picked her up for dinner at the house. I fixed a couple pork roasts, one with garlic, rosemary and a little lemon juice and another with fresh ground cumin seeds, red chili powder, and a little lemon juice. For vegetables we had bok choi with asian black mushrooms (fungus), which was a hit too. (The lentil and tomato soup the day before wasn't so much of a hit.)

It was a very nice afternoon and evening and I gave Mom a ride back to Queen Ann Manor and she mentioned several times what a terrific day it was. I worked Monday while Ericka and Louise made several quick visits to Mom, and explored Pike Place and Seattle in general. We met up in the evening for dinner at the Crab Cracker in Kirkland. Another great evening, then we took Louise to Seatac where she'd booked a hotel for the very early Tuesday flight.

I called Hospice on Tuesday to get a status. Nothing new to report at the moment, and as we thought the prognosis is rather fuzzy. Hospice's presence sets an expectation of six months or less, but it isn't always so. They were planning to have a meeting regarding Mom's care a day or two later so I asked if they could check on medical cannabis for Mom. I figure she would get a kick out of that, with a little chance to feel naughty if it is approved.

Mom left me a voice mail recently which I didn't quite understand. I'll be following up this weekend. It sounded like she fell, and couldn't get up for a while. She didn't sound very worried about, rather she was keeping me apprised of things. Like I said, I'll be following up.

PS - I'll be posting pictures of the sisters, Mom and Louise, in the next few days. I'm feeling a bit off and just started rehearsals.
